Explanatory Notes

• Situation
The museum building is situated in the north-west part of the completion area – alongside the tunnel ramp. The administration building for government use is situated as per the assignor’s requirements.
• Motor Vehicle Access
The motor vehicle access to the new museum complex is from Enga Street. The goods road transport vehicles drive parallel to the tunnel ramp, under the new building on level +2,60, continue under Dokkveien and adjoin it afterwards .
The car access to the administration building is from Munkedamsveien. In the stretch before Enga, the road features an additional lane, which allows stopping just in front of the main building entrance. It then continues to the underground garages which are to be built under the tunnel ramp.
• Pedestrian Access
The junction between Dronning Mauda gate and the tunnel ramp is linked with the main pedestrian stream coming from Aker Brygge. The Munkedamsveien and Dokkveien junction is connected with the angle between Dronning Mauda gate and the City Hall Square. The two directions cross in a square, situated inside the building. From there, the main entrance of the museum complex is accessed
• Attitude towards historical and cultural heritage
The building of the museum complex is located at a maximum distance from the cultural and historical buildings to be preserved. It comprises of two units: a low-rise unit on the side of the buildings for preservation, and a high-rise unit – on the side of the tunnel ramp. The high-rise unit, together with the administration building, form clearly the street frame of the tunnel and Munkedamsveien.
• Architecture
The shape of the building has been designed to meet the area and volume requirements of the assignor. The following have also been taken into consideration: 1/ low-rise buildings, part of the cultural and historical heritage, to the east; 2/ a group of high-rise buildings to the north-west and north-east; 3/ a group of middle-rise buildings to the south-west. All these building have the characteristics of different” periods and styles, they vary in shape and covering materials. The project envisages smooth, round outer walls, with narrow vertical lines of windows and rusticated stone in the smooth façade, not in a particular order and rhythm – in some cases only as a result of functional necessity. The turning of the building ”inside out”, in a kind of introversive way, is also conceptual: art is often like that, so is our attitude towards art - we need to be in a special mood and mindset to appreciate it.
